Abstract
Through the study of folk art, art brut, prime objects, and aural tradition I bring new depths to the practice of lutherie. I argue that instruments are modified by their inherit sociocultural baggage, and that the aesthetic choices a designer makes for these instruments can compound these values or create tension within them. The works I created over the fall 2018 through spring 2019 period are formed by and critique on this system and the web that is folk culture by containing representative elements of different cultures, classes, time periods, and professions.
