Abstract
My identity is constantly being questioned and challenged. In response to being othered and exoticized because of being a Jewish woman, I am reclaiming my identity through art. I create sculptures and installations that express the relationship I have with my identity, the relationship I share with my community - other Jewish people and more specifically Jewish women, and the relationship I have with the public- people outside of my community. My work is centered around cultural identity and influenced by how other contemporary artists have created art about their own or others’ identity. Inspired primarily by the authors Mieke Bal and Norman Bryson and their semiotic theory, I use my own symbolic language to reflect on my cultural identity and respond to how it is constantly under question.
