Abstract
In this thesis I will dive into E.T.A Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. analyze the character of Marie and Drosselmeyer using Propp’s morphology of folktale as a reference. In order to see the bigger picture and deepen the level of understanding of the story, the introduction offers background information on the author, the place the story was written and the literary movement it was born into. I divided each chapter into sections containing each other character types Marie and Drosselmeyer represented and included evidence to show how multidimensional they both are, and how complicated each of their relationships to the Nutcracker is. Overall, I found the both characters experience duality in their portrayals: Drosselmeyer by having multiple doppelgangers and Marie by acting as both a savior and a victim.
