Abstract

In this thesis, I argue that observation is a practically engaged, on-going, evaluative endeavour. In order to do so, I draw from Hanson’s seminal essay “Observation”, identifying the factors which inform observation that consequently lead to thinking of observation as an experience, rather than as a product/output. This is followed by a thorough exploration of an everyday example of observation. Finally, I expose the evaluative dimensions of observation. One of the main aims of this thesis is to contribute to critiques against hard-minded empiricist approaches to observation and the world.
