Abstract
St. Thomas Becket, one of the most popular saints of England, originated one of the largest cults during the late middle ages. The success of the cult had a main influence on the visual and material culture being created for St. Thomas Becket. From architecture, stained-glass, votive objects, to reliquaries, all forms of art were being made for the cult. This thesis looks at how this art interacted with its main audience: pilgrims. To understand this relationship, the research employed primary and secondary resources, focusing on visual examples. This research was also critically based on my own experience at Canterbury Cathedral this summer. These different factors were used to understand and reconstruct the experience of the medieval pilgrim. This thesis presents a new way in which to understand the multi-faceted relationship between pilgrims and experiencing the visual and material culture made for the cult of St. Thomas Becket.
