Abstract
Classical Realism: Dithering between Realism and Idealism is a series of charcoal figure drawings that blend Realism with 19th century French Academicism. Charles Bargue’s Drawing Course —a teaching staple of the French Academicism—is represented by two reproductions of his drawings and a caste of the antique statuary from which his students draw. Each figure drawing seeks a vital, characterful middle ground between classical idealization and likeness to a live model. In conversation with philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Gilles Deleuze, Classical Realism argues that figure drawings of this kind offer greater insight into the model’s subjecthood.
