Abstract

The goals of this project were to translate one of the most absurd works of Russian literature, Nikolai Gogol’s “The Nose,” and to adapt the text into something which would not only maintain the conversational tone and stylistic register of the original, but would also be accessible to a contemporary audience. I found it challenging to accomplish both of these goals due to the sheer nature of translation work. I found that in order to mimic Gogol’s humor and the semantics of sounds used in his writing, I would need to change the meanings of words and phrases. Because I wanted to remain as true to the original as possible, I felt I was not at liberty to make such conspicuous deviations. In my introductory chapter, I aim to explore themes of “The Nose,” potential meaning behind the work, the method of narration employed in the tale, and Gogol’s stylistic approach as a whole. I felt that discussing these topics would give the reader the necessary background information to be able to enjoy the text in all its glory.
