Abstract
The following thesis provides a study on Unamuno’s novel San Manuel Bueno, mártir and the representation of the country priest, don Manuel Bueno in this novel. The analysis is done through the exploration of the Pastoral and Confessional modes for the first two parts of the thesis, and the final part focuses on the analysis of Unamuno’s work with faith and doubt and the implications of these themes in the novel. The final section serves as a comparison to Unamuno’s other work, La agonía del cristianismo in order to demonstrate the changes in Unamuno’s life philosophy and how he was perhaps exemplifying his own struggles with faith in the figure of the priest or in the figure of the main narrator, Ángela Carballino.
