Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to review the process that Makoto Shinkai takes in his production of the animated film Voices of a Distant Star, as well as relate it to my own personal journey as a creative artist. Using a DVD copy with official English subtitles I begin by reviewing the initial production of the film from the small beginnings of forming the idea to the large scale success that was brought from it. I also relate the story of the film as an extended metaphor towards Shinkai’s creative process as well as my own. In Chapter 2 I put together the initial and current contemporary receptions of the film, added with my own interpretations towards the reviews and the context in which they were given. Finally in Chapter 3 I share the process for and describe a production of my own: the collaborative creation of the visual novel computer game Arcadia. I end with a discussion of my own plans for the future, along with the message that can be painted from Shinkai’s one-man film production.
