Abstract

A meta-analysis was performed in order to compare the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to MDMA-Assisted Therapy for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. After an exhaustive search of the literature, studies meeting search criteria for EMDR (n=8) and MDMA-Assisted Therapy (n=3) were coded for average pre- and post-treatment Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) scores and clinical response rates. While the weighted mean effect size revealed a small effect of EMDR on CAPS scores (ḡ = -0.28, SE = 0.11, |Z| = 2.604, p = .0041) and a large effect of MDMA-assisted therapy on CAPS scores (ḡ = -0.76, SE = 0.32, |Z| = 2.40, p=.0082 ), there was not a significant difference between them ( |Z| = 1.52, p =.0643). The findings indicate that while both treatments are effective for the treatment of PTSD, more research needs to be done to determine if MDMA-assisted therapy is more effective than EMDR.
