Abstract
For this thesis, I argue that installations made by artist Kara Walker engage the museum space they inhabit to offer a dialogue of institutional critique. Walker is known for her silhouette works, which deal with themes regarding race, gender, and class in a hyperviolent manner. To accomplish this analysis, I look at two major works by Kara Walker which are both installations composed of silhouette figures. I present these works in the context of institutional critique to see the extent to which Walker’s works can be classified in this manner. I close with a recent work by Kara Walker to see how her exhibition strategies have changed.
