Abstract
Computer games have become a popular form of media over the last several decades, and a popular industry to join. This thesis follows my first steps into game development with the creation of an action game called Gambit of One without the use of an engine, and how it was intended to be a role-playing game. This paper presents a background in computer game genres and historic games in the role-playing genre. I summarize the intended plot and backstory of Gambit of One and its influences. The importance of the current features, as well as the process of their implementation, are explained in detail. Then I analyze the features that are necessary to make Gambit of One a role-playing game, and describe how I would attempt to implement them. While I do not know the entire game development process, a lot of the process has been demystified for me while developing Gambit of One. I now have a better appreciation for all the time, planning, and effort that goes into any game. The code for Gambit of One as of January 2017 can be viewed at the following URL: https://github.com/sarah-russell12/Gambit-of-One/tree/xml-global-method-retrofit
