Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the history, artistic context, and social relevance of children’s picture books. The tangible result of this research is a fourteenpage picture book, which is pictured in the final portion of this paper. All prior research informed this creative process and resulting work. In the first section, this paper will give a brief history of picture books, identifying relevant examples and discussing their contributions to the field. This section will connect changes in literature for children to parallel shifts in Western ideas about childhood and child rearing. It will also explore the ways in which children’s literature is reflective of social climate, and how books for children can even influence the way we treat and think about children. The next section discusses the ways in which children view and understand art, and how this may affect art made for children. The final section is a discussion of the creative component of this project, an illustrated picture book. This section also includes a reflection on the creative process.
