Abstract
It is the primary goal of this essay not to necessarily contradict or oppose the common view of dissonance in Western Art Music, but rather to propose a more concrete level of classification of the various types and functions of dissonance. Particularly in how they relate to both strict musical styles and to music that foregoes specific rules in regards to the approach to dissonance. This essay will be divided into two sections. The first will deal with both the initial level of the categorization of types of dissonance, as well as how these types function within music from more modern forms that do not rely as heavily upon strict rules of dissonance. The second section will expand upon these types of dissonances and focus upon their function within the context of specific style, and how viewing dissonance through the lens of style and form can be a useful tool in the effort to categorizing its functions in a more precise way.
