Abstract

In this thesis I first explore the integral impact that translation and organization of The Walls and Las Paredes has on these two cohesively diverse works. An overview of the period of state-sponsored terrorism in Argentina from 1976-1983 known as Guerra Sucia, as well as a brief introduction of the playwright of Las Paredes, Griselda Gambaro, is given for context of the works discussed. By analyzing key translation discrepancies, I delve into the function translation plays between original script and its reproduction in English. The following types of discrepancies are analyzed: omission, colloquialism, play on words, untranslatable terms and approximation. The second chapter outlines the production elements of this thesis. By drawing comparisons between the works of Griselda Gambaro and the theory of Antonin Artaud, from his book The Theater and its Double, a basis of underpinning is set for the production. This is followed by a description of key characterization work that performed throughout the production as well as the importance and implications derived from the staged violence within the play. The thesis concludes with the audience responses to the performance itself.
