Abstract

This paper analyzes China’s trade policy before and after the 1978 economic reform and examines the impact of the WTO accession in 2001. It further assesses the composition of China’s international trade and discusses the trade relationship between China and United States with specific reference to the development of Chinese technology and its contribution to trade patterns. The determinants of China’s international trade are empirically analyzed using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method, with time series data covering the period from 1987 to 2011. The regression results suggest that China’s international trade is mostly affected by research and development expenditure and FDI. The main contribution of this paper is the assessment of the role of technology on China’s international trade using various technological indicators.
