Abstract
This study traces themes of embodiment, containment and enclosure in what I understand as two historical representations of female interiority: the late medieval devotional object of the Vierge ouvrante and the early modern mystic Teresa of Ávila's Interior Castle. My thesis explores these historical entities through the lenses of feminist inquiry and demonstrates the utility of listening for silence and looking for absence in the representations and creations of women at these times in history.
