Abstract
Popular art and media is too often focused on cisgender, white, straight people’s experiences, pushing people of color and LGBTQ people to the sidelines. In marginalizing these people in the media, TV shows are only helping to perpetuate the social marginalization and injustices faced by both the LGBTQ community and people of color in the US; and in these representations there are few positive traits for marginalized youth to look to. Looking to my own life as a trans person I try to bring a realistic depiction through my animations. Guided by contemporary intersectional feminist theories, this project works to bring positive representation to these marginalized peoples in hopes of breaking down stereotypes and attitudes towards LGBTQ people of all races. Further context is developed through the investigation of feminist artists such as Judy Chicago, Carrie Mae Weems, Ghada Amer, and animators such as Hayao Miyazaki, and Rebecca Sugar.
