Abstract
Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of physiological factors that greatly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In order to promote public health through the prevention and reduction of Metabolic Syndrome the following questions were asked: What is a likely mechanism that leads to the manifestation of Metabolic Syndrome and which mode of exercise best prevents and reverses these abnormalities? Metabolic Syndrome is likely the result of behavioral factors, including overconsumption and sedentarism, which induce an adaptive insulin resistant mechanism to become protracted leading to compensatory hyperinsulinemia and clinical manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome. A combination of resistance (strength) and aerobic training is an effective mode of exercise for the prevention and reversal of Metabolic Syndrome. This modality is supported within an evolutionary context and by primary research illustrating the effectiveness of this combination compared to other methods of exercise.
