Abstract
Rabies is a deadly neuropathic virus, which is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. It is one of the first diseases on record in ancient medical references. It was so recognizable and lethal that it had a reputation of mythic proportions throughout most of human history. In 1885, Louis Pasteur tested the first rabies vaccine on a human. The vaccine worked, and ushered in a new era of medical research. Over the years, the treatments to prevent rabies have been improved, increasing their effectiveness. Recent medical research is even attempting to make use of the virus’s unique properties in order to create new medical advancements. This ancient disease is still relevant today.
