Abstract

This thesis addresses The Drag King Book by Del LaGrace Volcano and Judith Halberstam as an instrument in their advocacy for negotiated meaning. I argue that the format of the work and the allusive content of the photography that it contains relate it to unilateral structures of meaning. Establishing that relationship allows the fragmentary and meandering character of their collaboration to disturb the user's confidence in attempts at definition. Ultimately, I turn to the assumptions that condition Del and Halberstam's work to read the Drag King Book as an attempt to develop new strategies for advocacy.
