Abstract
In this thesis, I worked with three separate social movements located within Florida. The key research question is: how do social movements utilize cultural resources and symbols and how does this affect whether a movement will succeed or fail? In order to address this question, I looked at how three different movements used frames and how their collective identity both informed and was informed by the symbolic work employed by these movements. By using evidence from multiple sources (participant observation, interviews with participants and organizers, and websites) I analyze the signifying work these movements engaged in.
