Abstract
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is an active cathedral in Spain whose structure is largely that of an eighth-century Andalusi mosque. The site’s history has allowed it to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and has made it a tourist destination. Given these things, this study examines how heritage is constructed in relation and contrast to history. Furthermore, it looks at how the past is understood and used at the Mosque-Cathedral by different groups. These conflicting interests draw upon the same history in distinct ways to stake their own claims (both sacred and secular) on the building, in a confrontation partially facilitated by the framework of the global heritage movement.
