Abstract
This paper places my feature film, The Forum in historical and cultural context. The Forum is an experiment in using Brechtian dramaturgical principals as a means of incorporating emerging media forms such as social networking and texting into film. The principles of alienation, gestus, historicization, realism and dialectics are traced through the filmography of Jean-Luc Godard in order to demonstrate a Brechtian foundation for cinema in the information age and the need for a 21st century update of his theories. This paper discusses how Brecht has influenced the contemporary media landscape and where his theories fall short of accomplishing their ends in light of new technologies and social practices. The Forum raises issues of new media communication by bringing them into conversation with older forms.
