Abstract
This thesis examines ancient Roman and Pompeian graffiti using a sociological lens. Graffiti relating to sexual topics are translated and analyzed with aid of secondary sources. Overall these examples of graffiti offer insight into cultural norms of society that allowed more sexual freedom for men than women. Graffiti allowed for the expression of sexuality while allowing an option for anonymity as well as a medium of communication available for multiple socio-economic classes.
