Abstract
The Manasota Culture prospered from around 500 BCE to 800 CE along the coastline that stretches from around the Tampa Bay all the way south to the northern end of Charlotte Harbor. Like many other cultures from coastal Florida, the Manasota people subsisted primarily on marine resources with some reliance on terrestrial resources. The Manasota Key Cemetery is a burial site located in the middle of Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida. Wilbur “Sonny” Cockrell excavated the site in 1989 with a team of local archaeologists and volunteers. It is one of the largest Manasota period burial sites in the region. This thesis aims to uncover information about the everyday lives of the Manasota people by studying the bioarchaeological record and burial patterns from the Manasota Key Cemetery.
