Abstract
This thesis studies the formation of identity in contemporary monologue drama through the close reading of Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett, Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel, Night Just Before the Forests by Bernard-Marie Koltès, Howie the Rookie by Mark O’Rowe, Thom Pain (based on nothing) by Will Eno, and 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane. The monologue form is separated into three categories that serve identity formation: audience, language, and embodiment. The second two-thirds of the thesis consists of an original monologue play, Post No Bills and a discussion of its performance. A copy of that performance is included on a DVD.
