Abstract
The microwave spectra of three small alkylthiols (ethanethiol, 1-propanethiol, and 2-propanethiol) were measured from 8.7—26.5 GHz with waveguide chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy (CP-FTMW) at ~250 K. All three of these alkylthiols can be either trans or gauche with respect to the C-S bond, and both conformers are present in reasonable abundance for each molecule. In fact, transitions from the 34S isotopically-substituted species are also easily seen in natural abundance. These molecules have been previously studied but our spectrometer is significantly more sensitive than prior instruments and we have been able to extend these prior fits to substantially higher values of the J rotational constant.
