Abstract
This thesis helps rectify the underrepresentation of historically and ideologically-oriented analyses of the 2007-2009 US Financial Crisis. Faced with the difficult task of retrospectively identifying some of the key causes of the crisis, economists have tended to look at the actions of large banking and government institutions. This thesis investigates not merely the specific policies that generated the catastrophic Great Recession, but also the ideological justifications that served as the foundation for their implementation. In order to conduct this investigation this thesis examines the most salient elements of economic theory, as well as most important episodes of political influence upon government policy on the part of the business and economics communities. Locating such elements of theory and moments of influence as the condition for the wave of de-regulatory policies of the 1980s, this thesis clarifies the ideological roots of the 2007-2009 US Financial Crisis.
