Abstract
This project is an examination of zines and their connection to a feminist legacy of self-publishing. In this paper I define zines, situate them historically amongst other practices of self- publishing since the late 19th and early 20th century, and present an analysis of sixteen feminist zines. I argue these zines represent the praxis of Third Wave feminism due to their ability to create embodied communities. I situate the practice of zine production as a means of consciousness-raising, which was the praxis of Second Wave feminism. The body of zines I analyzed were drawn from the collections at Papercut Zine Library located in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to this historical and textual analysis of zines, I created a series of three zines under the series title Fresh Squeezed Circus, all of which relate to topics pertinent to feminism and queer theory.
