Abstract

Each year the United States accepts more than one half of the refugees resettled worldwide; this thesis examines the process of refugee resettlement in the United States. I describe the development of the global refugee resettlement system as well as theoretical concepts and legal definitions of the refugee. Through ethnographic fieldwork done in the Atlanta office of the International Rescue Committee, a major refugee resettlement agency, I explore how the process unfolds on the ground. Thirty years after the Refugee Act of 1980, now is a critical time to examine refugee resettlement in the United States
