Abstract
The idea that the government has attempted to influence the American people by managing news media has most recently taken purchase among scholars and journalists discussing the Gulf Wars, but the histories of World War II and the Vietnam War are also a part of this narrative. Since World War II the government of the United States has attempted to manage the effect of war coverage in two ways: by controlling independent news media, and through the production of separate, government-sponsored accounts of military conflict news from the government. In this thesis I will be discussing how this process has occurred, focusing on the wartime films of John Ford as primary resources. Works by John Ford are valuable historically because they represent government activity based on the idea that such media accounts of war conditioned Americans response to state involvement in military conflict.
