Abstract
How did first century Jews treat synagogues within the region of Judaea? The way in which writers and architects constructed these buildings tell us much about place in the region. This thesis analyzes the issue of sacred place through a study of ancient synagogues by looking at available literary and archaeological remains from the first century. The first chapter looks at the archaeological remains of synagogues to determine their function in local cities, the second chapter approaches the works of Josephus in order to distinguish the role of the synagogue across the larger landscape, and the last chapter provides analysis of the canonical Gospels to see literal behavior in the synagogue. As demonstrated through a close analysis of these sources, the synagogue played an important role by orienting people through both their social and physical world in first century Judaea.
