Abstract

This thesis is an exploration of the possibilities and problematics of feminist anthropology. Through conversations with individual anthropologists, I aim to understand the gendered experience of working in the discipline, feminist critiques of anthropology, feminist methodology and activist scholarship, as well as the perspectives that feminists can offer anthropology in terms of identity, difference and marginalization. I begin with a history of feminist anthropology through the eyes of some of the senior contemporary feminist anthropologists. I continue with a discussion of difference in feminist anthropology, attending to intersecting identities. Finally, I consider the possibilities for feminist research and the progress that has been made toward an ethical and egalitarian anthropology, and the work toward this goal that remains.
