Abstract

The primary goal of this thesis is to assess the relationship between international trade in goods, policies relating to trade and the development of so-called infant industries, and the growth of a national economy from developing to developed. This thesis approaches the question through a case-study method, utilizing data collected over the course of 40 years. The country of note, South Korea, has been the focus of much research in the past. The general conclusions of the thesis are that trade can be a strong driver for growth, and that policies, when properly calculated and implemented, can also strongly drive growth.
