Abstract

At the turn of the twentieth century, a new style of vernacular architecture began appearing on the residential horizon of America, due largely to the dedication of Gustav Stickley. His magazine, The Craftsman, carried the ideals of the English Arts and Crafts movement to America. There are many characteristics that define the Craftsman style of Gustav Stickleys magazine. His main goal was to bring the Arts and Crafts movement to the hearths of Americans, thus this thesis focuses on Craftsman traits related to that goal. The thesis includes discussions on the movements attachment to the natural world, and how Stickley strove to unite the American home with nature, both for the sake of health and for the sake of visual harmony, Stickleys goal of making his homes affordable to the middle-class American, as well as the pattern of home building in this era. It also deals with the fact that vernacular architecture is meaningless without inhabitants, and thus explores the relationship of Stickleys floorplans to the lives of the residents.
