Abstract
This thesis examines the gradual process of Romanization and church reform in the kingdom of Leon-Castile during the eleventh and twelfth centuries by studying the liturgy as a vehicle for change. It investigates the various ways--political, religious, and economic--in which Romanization and church reform were achieved and how these ways engaged the liturgy as a mechanism of change. In addition to looking at the history of Romanization and church reform in Len-Castile, it analyzes and compares the principal liturgical books of the Roman and Mozarabic Masses in order to illustrate practical application of Romanization and church reform in the religious life of the medieval Spanish kingdoms.
