Abstract
Walpurgis Night in Sarasota is a piece in four movements for piano, tuba, clarinet, viola and cello. There are three important elements to this piece. The first is the narrative that is constructed around the theme of "Walpurgisnacht." The second is the synthesis of outside references. The third is how the piece engages history. As a response to the restrictive mode of cultural production established by traditional modernism, this piece attempts to appropriate stylistic characteristics of exterior sources. As a response to the cultural disengagement of traditional postmodernism, the piece seeks to integrate these references into an organizational logic. As such, Walpurgis Night in Sarasota takes elements of both modernism and postmodernism in order to create an autonomous art object that is not entirely isolated from its contemporary culture.
