Abstract
Throughout the ages art has shaped our opinions of nature, specifically the level in which we feel humanity is in control of nature or at its mercy. Landscapes that depict the sublime qualities of natures destructive power have continued to have an impact on these ideas of ours. A prime example of arts power to influence can be found in the various depictions of the archetypal deluge. Imagery of apocalyptic flooding has provided the masses with an understanding of Gods ability to respond to humanitys misbehavior. These images, as well as many other depictions of the sublime, continue to resonate in current images of disaster in the media. Though our society is more secular now, many Americans come from religious backgrounds and are exposed to the idea of God being wrathful and destructive. For many, natural disaster is rationalized scientifically. However, it is hard for many of these same people to deny the existence of biblical ghosts that haunt their perception of natural disaster. With this said, the various historical representations of "The Deluge" certainly have an impact on the medias various representations of natures fury, especially in regards to the international Global Warming debate. Employing these diluvian tropes in my own artwork, I hope to provide my audience with the opportunity to reflect on their role on the planet, and find a sense of "peace" in whatever form possible, if possible at all.
