Abstract

After achieving certification with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, a course provided by the Internal Revenue Service, James Dyke completed an internship with United Way Suncoast, assisting members of the community, comprising of a host of different tax needs, with filing their tax returns. He explores issues with taxation in the United States, ranging from fears and stresses of the Internal Revenue Service, the complexity of filing a return in the United States, tax refunds in comparison to individuals’ overall financial health, professional tax filers, and taxes on the wealthiest individuals and corporations. He then offers suggestions on how to make the tax filing process more beneficial for the everyday taxpayer.
