Abstract

Emerging from the hotbed of social complexities in modern Peru, novelist, poet, and ethnologist Jos Mara Arguedas (1911-1969) has come to symbolize a tortured but unyielding attempt to articulate and perhaps reconcile the dramatic elements of tension between the Quechua-speaking indigenous world of the Andean highlands and the centralized, urbanizing force in Lima and on the coast. This thesis attempts to explore Arguedas' endeavor to examine and thoughtfully give form to the convolution of both his personal experiences and his vision of the harmonious and violent potentialities that exist in Peruvian society. Los ros profundos (1958) is a prized example of Arguedas' ingenious success in using the dialogic space of the novel to create a stylized image of the social world as seen and experienced by the author. The novel itself fluctuates between narrative modes, linguistic and cultural influences, and even extends into intuitive social prophecies, messianic myth, and social ritual. In examining these discourses, this thesis undertakes a close reading of the novel, offering insight from Arguedas' own writings about Peruvian literature and culture, criticism from Julio Ortega, Sara Castro-Klarn, ngel Rama, and the theoretical ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin.
