Abstract

English Abstract: My thesis looks at three novels which represent three different moments in the Ecuadorian indigenist literary current. Cumand, o Un drama entre salvajes (Cumand, or A Drama Among Savages, 1879) by Juan Len Mera, is an early manifestation of the current (frequently called indianism); Huasipungo (The Villagers, 1934), by Jorge Icaza, is the classic Ecuadorian work of orthodox indigenism; and Porqu se fueron las garzas (Why the Herons Left, 1979), by Gustavo Alfredo Jcome, is a late manifestation of the current (frequently called neoindigenism). Each chapter of the thesis presents a summary and analysis of one of the novels; the life and work of its author; the history of the era in which the novel was written and of the time in which it is set; and an examination of the representation of the novels "Indian" or "indigenous" characters as influenced by all of these factors. With the passing of time, each novel is more transcultured than the last and sees the "indigenous problem" as more complicated; nevertheless, there are many similarities between the three. Each one enters into dialogue with the previous novels of the current and with its own historic moment, and each seems to support the unification of society, advancing explicitly or implicitly that all its members are the same in some important sense or another.
