Abstract

This thesis compares the work of the surrealist Claude Cahun and the postmodern artist Cindy Sherman. I reject the assumption of several feminist scholars that Cahun and Sherman are presenting multiple or fragmentary selves. Instead, I claim that Cahun and Sherman reject the body as a symbol of identity. I support this claim by showing that both Cahun and Sherman stage their works as performances and continuously question the authenticity and individuality of the body.
