Abstract

In this thesis, I conducted ethnographic research with Fuzin Dance Artists, specifically focusing on the SalOm Project, a dance-based performance promoting peace within oneself, in personal relationships, and on a global level. I participated in the performance as a dancer, attending preliminary meetings and rehearsals from May 2007 to August 2007, and I conducted interviews with company members from August 2007 to November 2007. While dancing in the performance gave me an insiders view of the processes involved in creating SalOm: Step One, I was also faced with the difficulty of data collection, as typical methods of note taking were made impractical. I organized my data into four common themes I found in my research. First, the SalOm Project placed a strong emphasis on making the movements performed relevant to the individual performing them, rather than asking the dancers to conform to the choreographers vision. Second, traditional roles found in a dance performance, particularly those separating performers from audience members from musicians were blurred and distorted to create a contemporary piece. Third, Fuzon is committed to community outreach programs and collaboration, particularly with non-dancers. Finally Fuzin hopes to use dance to motivate real social change.
