Abstract
The neo-evolutionary classificatory system proposed by Service and Sahlins (1960) is a model that does not account for uniquely local evidence of social complexity. The socio-cultural evolutionary stages outlined by Service and Sahlins have become major socio-cultural types. Socialcultural systems that do not fit well into the neo-evolutionary typology are either misclassified or have no clear agreed upon classification. The social complexity marked by the transition from chiefdom to statehood remains a complex gray area that cannot be explained by the traditonial evolutionary framework. The Preceramic PePeruviand of the Peruvian North Central Coast is an example of precocious social complexity that is difficult to discuss within the neo-evolutionary framework.
