Abstract
This thesis took the form of five original musical compositions using drum set, upright bass, electric and acoustic guitars, cello, clarinet, piano, and voice. Stylistically, the compositions are a synthesis of institutional or academic music with rock n' roll and funk. The music is an attempt to bring together the accessibility and unique expressiveness of popular music and the intellectual stimulation and satisfaction of institutional music. The compositions are also meant to form a cohesive concert that should be of interest to many types of listeners. The essay accompanying these pieces explores the compositional process that created them. I first address extra-compositional and general theoretical concepts used in the compositions, and follow that with an indepth analysis of the works themselves. This analysis shows, through a discussion of relevant music theory, stylistic choices, and the compositional process, how I synthesized two disparate styles of music.
