Abstract
My thesis produced a theistic interpretation of Archibald MacLeishs humanistic J.B. in order to recapture some of the strengths found in the biblical Book of Job. I produced my theistic interpretation of J.B. during January 2006. Through this experiment I attempted to establish a J.B. that retained the same sort of faith in God that Job does in the Book of Job. I argue that J.B.s universalized suffering and his everyman-like character provide the audience with an account to which they can personally empathize with. I then maintain that by establishing a presence of God within the play not found in the Broadway production, I was able to provide J.B. with a God to place his faith in. By this I intended to give my audience a faithful model to which they can aspire.
