Abstract

Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata Opus 28 shows non-traditional compositional techniques adapted for use in a traditional context. Op. 28 is a single-movement sonata, distinctive in that various sections correspond not only to sections of a single-movement sonata-allegro form, but also to the separate movements of a multi-movement sonata. This thesis analyzes the formal structure of this sonata mainly through the use of thematic and rhythmic elements, as Prokofiev's harmonic technique does not provide a strong enough sense of tonal centers to create dramatic contrast through tonal opposition. Op. 28 also alters the function of the recapitulation, eliminating some of the hierarchies found in traditional sonatas. The analysis is situated in the context of twentieth century Russian musical culture, which was heavily influenced by European Romanticism. A discussion of the tradition of 'sonata' as musical structure, in its many forms, is also included to give more perspective to the traditional aspects of Prokofiev's work. In addition to a musical analysis supplemented with historical background on Russian musical culture, I gave a performance of the piano sonata at a recital given in Sainer Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. on April 22, 2006. A recording of this performance is included.
