Abstract

This thesis explores the extent to which three European countries, France, Italy, and Romania, collaborated with Nazi Germany in the Holocaust during World War II. This work offers overwhelming justification for indicting not only the Nazis, but many other Europeans as well, for the crimes of the Holocaust. Through a case study approach, this thesis examines the history of anti-Semitism in each culture, the structure, personalities, and degree of sovereignty of each government, and each countrys unique relationship with Nazi Germany. A discussion of the distinctive qualities about each country that differentiate it from the other two will follow. From these contrasts, political opportunism in diplomatic relations with Germany regarding the Jews is identifiable as a common reason why the wartime governments of France, Italy, and Romania cooperated with Germanys demands for Jewish deportees. The history of anti-Semitism in each country is also an extremely important determinant for the degree of collaboration by each government.
