Abstract
This thesis is an anthology of prose adaptations of the folk ballad, ''Tam Lin,' the Child Ballads that are grouped under the name, 'Tam Lin,' modem spoken and sung versions of ''Tam Lin,' and tales analogous to the story of ''Tam Lin.' The anthology traces the ways in which the story of 'Tam Lin' has been used and adapted since its entrance into mainstream awareness with the publication of Francis J. Child's The English and Scottish Popular Ballads in 1882. The anthology also examines the multiple transformations sequence which appears in both 'Tam Lin' and other tales, and the ways in which the use of the multiple transformations sequence gives insight into theories of identity and humanity in different eras of Western culture.
